WINTER SOLSTICE RITUAL:
STORIES AND DRUMS TO REKINDLE THE SUN

“One of the most universal human rituals is to gather together in the dark of winter to kindle lights and invoke the return of the sun and spring.  This ritual is known by many names and takes many forms around the world.  Firelight, stories and song are frequently at the heart of it.”    Marc Young -- Storyteller, Percussionist

8PM until we rekindle the sun

If you have a favorite drum or rhythm instrument bring it along -- or use an
assortment of ours from many different cultures.
If you can chant and clap your hands, you have all the technical skills you’ll need to
help wake the sun.

“Science has given us an increasingly rich knowledge of the rhythms that rule our time on this planet.  Rhythm piled atop rhythm, with even the simplest one-celled creature vibrating on distinct quantum, atomic, cellular and molecular levels.  To say nothing of the on/off rhythm of neurons firing in the brain, the butterfly rhythms of the heart, the ponderous rhythm of galaxies spinning around a remote gravitational axis and the mysterious rhythm that wakes long-dormant cicadas from the earth.  We are embedded in a universe of rhythms, which means we are embedded in a universe of time.  Yet we seldom appreciate just how deeply we are dancing to these rhythms.

Our word religion comes from a Latin root that means ‘to bind together’.  One function of religion is to bind together the many rhythms that affect us by creating ceremonies -- technologies of ritual -- that enable us to synchronize and vividly experience the pulsating dances of the personal, the cultural and the cosmic.  When this technology works, the reward is a new dimension of rhythm and time: the sacred.”
